Purpose of Amitabha Puja and Jangchog

The word Amitabha means infinite light. Buddha Amitabha has attained the state of enlightenment many eons ago. One of his aspirations is that whoever has faith in him, wishes to be reborn in his pureland, remembers and calls his name sincerely would take rebirth in his pureland called Sukhavati.

Through his accomplishment of aspirations, he manifests the pureland where beings without vital defilements can be reborn thereupon one can purify the sins and accumulate merits and wisdom. Every cause and condition therein can lead a person to attain enlightenment and there is no unfavorable conditions for downfall.

According to the Mahayana and Vajrayana teachings, Buddha Shakyamuni has mentioned the qualities of Buddha Amitabha and described the details of Sukhavati Pureland. Based on sutra and tantra teachings, there is a special method to liberate the deceased. This particular practice is called Jangchog which means purification ritual.

With the development of the loving kindness and compassion while practice the method in the ritual of Amitabha, the karmic obscurations accumulated by the deceased since beginningless time can be purified and the consciousness of the deceased can then be transferred to the Western Pureland. Whereupon one receives the teachings directly from Buddha Amitabha and finally attain enlightenment.
